Pavlo Lopata was born in the village of Kaliniv, Pryashiv region, Slovak Republic on March 20, 1945. He studied at the University of Fine Arts in Bratislava from 1966-1968. In 1969 he emigrated to Canada and resided in Toronto.
In 1972 he obtained his Commercial Arts Diploma from George Brown College and on May 30, 1986 obtained a Fine Arts Diploma from the Ontario College of Art, Toronto.
From 1991 to 1998 he was curator and executive director of the Ukrainian Canadian Art Foundation. As curator he organized over 70 exhibits of many different artists from Canada, USA and Ukraine. In his artistic endeavours he has mastered the use of pencil, egg tempera, acrylics and oils. Many themes are visible in his works, such as, portraits, lemko churches, linear-expressionism, icons and surrealistic-symbolism. Pavlo is also a prolific author, having written over 180 articles related to the arts that have been published in periodicals, journals and newspapers.
To date, over 800 of his artistic works can be found in private and museum collections in Canada, USA, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovak Republic and Ukraine. He has had 24 solo exhibits and participated in over 70 group shows. Over 95 articles have been written by numerous authors and published in the press about his art. He presently lives and works in his private studio in a ukrainian community "Poltava Country Club" near Terra Cotta which is located northwest of Toronto. He has a wife Mary and one son Petro.
